Chinese Herbal Medicine, along with the other components of TCM, is one of the great healing systems of the world, with an unbroken tradition dating back to the Third Century BC. Throughout its history it has continually developed in response to changing clinical conditions, and has been sustained by continuous monitoring and extensive research into every aspect of its use. This process continues even today. The development of modern medical diagnostic techniques and the practice of traditional herbal medicine combine to provide a very powerful range of treatment options.
Chinese herbal medicine is based on the concepts of Ying & Yang (‘complementary opposites that interact within the greater whole of the body as part of a dynamic system’ – Wikipedia). It aims to treat the many ways in which the fundamental balance and harmony between Ying & Yang may be undermined and the ways in which a person’s Qi (vitality) may be depleted or blocked. With its own principles and diagnostic methods, Chinese herbal therapy clinical strategies are based upon diagnosis of signs and symptoms that reflect an imbalance.
TCM herbs include flowers, leafstalks, seeds and roots. They are mainly formulated in China. Each herb is used for specific purposes and performs particular functions. Usually more than 2-10 combinations are prescribed specifically to target a patient’s condition. Chinese herbal treatments are taken in several ways including: raw, cooking and drinking the extract, granules (used like making instant coffee), or tea or tablet form.
As the tradition as a whole places great emphasis on lifestyle management in order to prevent disease, TCM recognises that health is more than just the absence of disease. It has a unique capability in helping to maintain and enhance our capacity for well-being and happiness. A large range of Chinese patent medicines are also available for this purpose.
Chinese herbal medicine may be used in conjunction with: Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Ear Acupuncture, Massage/Acupressure, Cupping, Gua Sha.
